  You just cannot legislate against old ladies. Gordon Brown certainly found that out and was lucky to get away without a clip around the ear besides losing an election.
  There is an apocryphal story hereabouts in Somerset that tells of a Viking raid into Uphill where the marauders left their boats in the pill [harbour] and charged inland intent on rape and looting. They ignored the little old lady as they ran inland after the villagers. She took exception to this hairy bunch, she was not impressed, and so hobbled down to the pill, cast off all moorings, and let the tide take the longboats out to sea. This all lead to the Vikings to panic and so on, local populace gained heart, and the marauders got eighteen bells kicked out them
  Well now, according to what I hear I think something like this is going to happen to David Cameron. He seems hell bent on this gay marriage thing for example and it is not going down at all well with this group of ladies. It is apparent that when they were younger they did not have much clue about homosexuality, it was a total mystery. Now, following the media being so explicit, they know a bit more and are uncomfortable. If someone is unwise enough to be crude and refer to gay sex explicitly then it gets short shrift and, if related and young, the offender metaphorically gets a clip around the ear. In their view, it has gone far enough, the civil partnership looks after things appropriately.
 Changing the nature of marriage is a step too far. You enter their domain, the edifice of their world, with all the stages of their life that inevitably involve birth, christening, first day at school, and their continuing role. We often forget but we are not really ruled by men but by mums and grandmas. They will not take kindly to something that they see weakens the foundations of the family structure.
 This group is already very cross about Europe. Many remember Dads going off to war and some not returning. Most remember being deprived of having a Dad there during childhood. 
 I honestly believe that David Cameron has ignored the little old ladies and everywhere they are taking off the moorings and casting off the long ships. And oh do remember that in the story the villagers gained pluck, turned around and beat the hell out the interlopers.

Where you stand and prejudice. I  have written before on the Newfoundland aphorism of “where you stand depends where you sit.” With that saying in mind here are some of my thoughts on that most contentious of subjects - prejudice, -  racial or ethnic, take your choice.  I look to where I came from, my origins, and then look at what affects my life today.  I come to the inevitable conclusions that prejudice is illogical , not Christian, and most certainly not productive.   My Grandfather, William Hogan, and Grandmother, Mary Ellen, were part of the Irish diaspora that took place in the latter part of the 19th Century. I was called a Flat Earther

Gordon Brown called me a "Flat Earther" FPI trawler in ice. In December 2009 the Prime Minister, Mr.Gordon Brown, called me a "Flat Earther". His remarks were pointedly directed at anyone who harboured any scepticism of Climate Change and that included me. Now I am a retired Master Mariner so that epithet seemed somewhat silly as I have spent a life time sailing over the horizon and not falling over the edge of the world.
