Tina & Prue

Image
This is Tina with Prue Hopkins - the wives of Old Salts. Seafarers wives are very special for many, many reasons but particularly when you think that they both raised three children without husbands at home and all that entails.....

Half a century

And so the Young Salts became Old Salts. This is John Hopkins and myself taken during his visit in July. Now we are Grandfathers and both feel loved by children and grandchildren. Wonderful isn't it?

1955 was a good year.

Image
1955 was a good year, a very good year, I met the girl of my dreams and I met my very best friend. The girl became my wife [and is still the girl of my dreams] and John Hopkins is still my best mate over half a century on. I mentioned John in Velia & Al's blog in July but didn't put any pictures so here's a couple. The b&w picture was taken late 1955/early 1956 and is John and I serving as apprentices on board the m/v "Fresno City" a tramp ship doing the usual round the world voyage taking in all continents and all oceans. What makes a best friend? First of a person you can trust with your life [and had to at times], secondly someone you can share close thoughts with, and thirdly someone you can share a whole lot of laughs with and the days then shine and you remember them. Bear in mind it was no piece of cake, we were 17 years of age but doing a man's job. Neither of us would change it and would do it all again. It was only natural that John would be

The vessel in the centre of the picture is a Yorkshire Coble, the traditional fishing vessel of this coast. This is in Bridlington Harbour.

Had a great day out up on the Yorkshire coast - watched a Roman skirmish with all the weapons and tactics explained. Visited Flamborough Head Light-house and had fish and chips just up from Bridlington Harbour.

Michelle, Greg, and your Mum & Dad went to Bridlington, Sewerby Hall, and Flamborough Head Lighthouse. Bubby took this picture, she reckons the Lighthouse moved, your Dad moved, and the sky. and she had not a drop to drink! Had a super fish & chip supper by the harbour. More later.....

Nan's Dad as a Young Man

Image
The young man holding the horse's head is Nan's Dad, Herbert Goode, who was born in 1885. He was a "a man's man" he was a yeoman farmer, butcher, haulier, and was in the Great War. The house behind was No.1 Bullring, Nuneaton, and Nan[Grace Goode] was born in the room immediately above the cart in the picture. [Don't know who was the other guy in the piccie.] So folks you have seen three Great-great-grandparents of Grace, Jack etc. tonight so watch this space for more pictures and stories............God Bless You All - Goodnight

Pomp's Mum & Dad

Al quite rightly has taken me to task for neglecting my blog so here goes. Velia, Al, Gerard and Claire are keeping us all very happy indeed with the photos and stories of the children and their lives - wonderful. Now I'll start the stories and pictures of the past and their beginning. Here's the start - this picture is the wedding of Robert Vowles and Florence Bucknell, the father and mother of Leslie Robert Vowles, aka Mum's Dad. Robert was a painter & decorator, a professional man, in a repected trade. He played rugby for Weston super Mare and we believe played for Somerset. This was taken about 1906/07.
